Julie Anderson

Julie Anderson grew up in Portland, Maine, and began playing the viola at age 9. As a high school student, she was the recipient of the Gould Award (1999) for solo performance as well as the Emerson scholarship to Interlochen Arts camp (1998.) She was a member of the New England Conservatory Youth Philharmonic Orchestra. Julie earned her Bachelor's Degree at Rice University in Texas, where she studied with Karen Richter at Rice's Shepherd School of Music and was a member of the Rice Campanille Orchestra. She went on to receive her Master's Degree at Notre Dame de Namur University in California.

Julie has had a wide range of experience as a professional violist. She was the Principal violist of the Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra for two years. She was a contracted violist with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Lucas Richmond for 8 years. She has done regular freelance work as a violist in the Colby Symphony Orchestra and the Bates College Orchestra. Julie is a Suzuki-trained teacher for viola/violin and has given music lessons to many students over the years. She has played all over Maine and beyond in string ensembles for special events, weddings, and performances. Her work in the community includes playing at senior centers, in local schools, community benefits, and a youth summer music camp. She has also performed and recorded with many bands, from folk music to rock, including local and national acts. Julie resides in Southern Maine with her family and enjoys travel, gardening, and creative arts.
